Showcase of Work

This showcase highlights work I have done in literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), and technology over the years. You will find each section listed by heading and described below.

  • Literacy: In this section you will find work directly related to my master's area content. There are various projects and papers listed in this area.

  • Special Education: This heading is included as many of our students we teach have IEPs or 504s. It is important to understand about various disabilities to become a better teacher. This is one example of work I have done during my graduate work in this areas.

  •  English as a Second Language (ESL): This is my minor of my degree and showcases work from this area. I took a few classes that focused on ESL when working toward my degree.

  • General Education (Social Studies/Math): Although I currently teach middle school, I am certified to teach K-8. I wanted to include these becuase they show mastery across curriculum and age ranges.

Over the course of my graduate work, I have collected these items that demonstrate growth and excellence in my educational major and minor (ESL). These artifacts have been carefully chosen to show knowledge and mastery across curriculum and grade levels.

Literacy

Inquiry Project- Literacy

In our 7th grade curriculum we study poetry and I was challenged to create an inquiry question which ended up being, "How might rubrics better help my students understand basic types of poetry and apply it to their writing?". Research began to find scholars that would help me find ways to help me learn to teach poetry and relay it to my students.

I created this to help poetry become more approachable to students and to teachers hesitant to teach it. It shows my creativity and use of outside resources. To the left you will see PDFs that include the lesson plan as well as the annontated bibliography for your viewing.

Show, Not Tell

Many students have trouble showing with their words from elementary years up to middle school. Many of them are still developing this craft. This lesson plan was create and designed for a late elementary classroom to help students transform basic sentences into ones that show.

This lesson shows my knowledge in the area of literacy by having students work on showing work with other words instead of just telling what is happening.

Writing a Memoir

This writing sample displays a demonstration of knowledge of a memoir. I decided to try a new writing genre and attempt writing it and working through differnet aspects of that genre. As I have my students write memoirs in our curriculum, I wanted to chose to write a memoir to look at it from the student point view, which is why I chose this genre of writing. This is why I  chose to share this piece. This memoir shows not only my skill in memoir writing through my end result, but also shows my teaching journey.

Purpose, Summarizing, & Comprehend

I created this lesson for students that have trouble verbalizing what they have read, summarizing, or have could use reinforcement in reading skills. I have encountered many students in my teaching journey who have had trouble with this skill. In this lesson, students listen to an audio version of a book and follow along. They then use the text to make predictions and practice going back to the text to answer questions. This lesson works well with English Language Learners.

Special Education

Being a teacher in a general education classroom means that you teach to all students. In order to best reach all students, you need to be aware of different learning styles and understand any needs your students may have. This presentation was created in order to help other teachers and students better understand Asperger's Syndrome  and High Functioning Autism. This presentation demonstrates knowledge about this area of special education.

English as a Second Language

This write up was really significant in my Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) journey and was create to teach perspective to gain understanding of your ESL students. Taking a step back and looking at a student and their culture not only gives perspective, it also helps you understand actions or misunderstandings based on experiences the student may or may not have had. When I sat down to think about the student, I learned a lot about the student and the culture.

General Education- Elementary

Social Studies

Landforms

This lesson was created on the topic of landforms for a middle elementary classroom grade level to help students gain understanding of their place in the world. Many of my students have not had the opportunity to be world travelers or even get outside of the state. A teaching partner and I took advantage of technology and incorporated Google Earth to help our students see the world. This lesson demonstrates creative use of technology and resources.

Math

Using Money

This lesson was created to give students an authentic interaction with money. Many of my students did not have much experience using money (it was evident each time they wanted to buy bagels or lunch) and this lesson was deisgned to help them learn how to use money in a real life way. This lesson shows use of authenic assessment and practice, which helps students understand how the topic or subject is used in a real life way, which deepens understanding.
